Tyrone council rescinds outdated polling-place language in town code

The Tyrone Town Council voted to rescind section 8-2 of the town code of ordinances, removing a provision that named the First Baptist Church as the town's polling place and noted early voting at the library.

Brandon, a town staff member, told the council staff had identified the outdated language while researching other items and recommended repeal because polling locations are better set by council action as conditions change. “We now do early voting the last couple of cycles here,” Brandon said, adding that early voting and election-day voting have been held at the library and that the Old Town Hall community room will be used once renovations are finished.

Councilor (moving the motion) formally proposed rescinding section 8-2 and a second was called; a voice vote was taken and the motion passed. Staff said the Fayette County election board inspects and approves proposed polling sites for practical suitability and that the technical-review and coordination steps would continue to be followed as the town identifies sites. The repeal does not immediately change where voting is held; it removes a specifically named site from the town code and allows the council to designate polling locations as needed.

The council also discussed that if a future polling-site change requires funding (for example, power upgrades), council action and an appropriation would be needed.
