City staff explain insurance, pension cost changes; police report vehicle theft, request ambulance runtime data

During the Dec. 8 meeting, City Administrative Officer Reneé Major and Deputy Treasurer Alison Melton addressed council questions about rising insurance and pension expenses.
Diane Cook asked about higher insurance costs. Major and Melton said several automobile claims had increased insurance expenses, staff had been shopping for the best rates, and workers' compensation insurance had switched to a new provider to obtain a better rate. Karin Tyrer asked about pension cost increases; Major and Melton said the timing of payroll and related accounting affected the pension expense figures recorded in the period.
Police Chief Dean Hayes said there was a recent theft from a vehicle on Surrey Lane. Hunter Wilson noted an increase in warnings and citations; Chief Hayes said the increase was attributable to being fully staffed with officers. Council member Cook asked whether the city had recent Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS (AMFEMS) ambulance response-time data; Major said she would request runtime data for the first three quarters of 2025 from AMFEMS and forward it to the council and mayor.
