Council advances chief appointment terms and schedules hearing on junk-vehicle ordinance

At its April 20 meeting the Grundy Center City Council opened a public hearing on Ordinance 592, which would amend Chapter 28.04 (Ambulance Chief) and Section 35.06 (Police Chief) to set three-year appointment terms. A resident asked when the ordinance would take effect; the hearing closed with no further discussion. The council then completed the ordinance’s first reading by a unanimous vote.
The council also discussed Ordinance 593, amendments to Chapter 51 covering junk, hobby and junk vehicles. Smith noted edits related to businesses handling scrap metal and established a hobby vehicle season from April 1 through Sept. 30. Stensland asked what the plan would be after adoption. The council voted to publish Ordinance 593 for a public hearing on May 4, 2026.
Other routine business included approval of minutes and permission to close 7th Street for the Kling Memorial Library Summer Reading Kick Off on May 30. Leonard Stephens used the public forum to praise the city attorney’s work on the junk-vehicle ordinance. The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
