City building inspectors Dean and Darrel Shuey told the council that several contractors working in Grundy Center are not following the city’s current permit and inspection procedures.
The Shueys said the current policies have been in place for roughly 10 years and recommended the city increase required inspections, impose fines or issue discontinuance notices for noncompliance, update the municipal building code to the 2027 edition, and raise permit fees to account for additional inspection workload.
Council Member Kuester emphasized the ordinance and procedures were originally adopted to protect property owners and potential buyers, and said contractors and property owners must follow the rules or face enforcement. Mayor Eberline said the council will consider the suggested changes and return with further action; no formal vote or ordinance change was taken at the meeting.
