Ely council approves pursuing expansion of redevelopment district to cover East Aultman, Great Basin Boulevard and East Ely

The Ely City Council voted unanimously on March 13 to authorize staff to pursue an amendment to the city’s Redevelopment Plan that would enlarge its boundary to include commercially zoned parcels on East Aultman Street and Great Basin Boulevard and a presently undeveloped residential area in East Ely.
City Building Official Don Hendrickson explained the change would expand the city’s ability to fund improvement projects in areas that historically have had fewer redevelopment resources. Hendrickson outlined the next steps: a survey and legal descriptions of properties to be included, Regional Planning Commission review, and then return to the Council for final action.
Councilman Terrill Trask said he understood the vote would only start the process, not finalize the boundary. Trask moved to approve pursuing the amendment; Councilwoman Melody Van Camp seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Hendrickson and staff emphasized that the amendment is the start of a longer process; property inclusion and any subsequent redevelopment projects would require additional public hearings and approvals.
