Commissioner Burt Deutsch moved to formally oppose the rezoning; Commissioner Sandy Walker seconded and the motion passed unanimously. City Attorney Stephen Porter had told the commission the hearing is set for noon Aug. 21 at the old jail building downtown and that neighbors have raised concerns about loss of trees and greenspace, flooding, traffic and congestion. Porter also said part of the parcel may lie within Metro Louisville's jurisdictional boundary for Bellemeade rather than Lyndon, which could complicate the process.
The commission directed staff to notify Bellemeade residents about the hearing and the need for a petition to request a different hearing location and time. Porter will draft the petition and volunteers will be recruited to collect signatures; 300 signatures are required to submit the petition to the body scheduling the hearing.
The commission did not take a position on the underlying development plan beyond opposing the rezoning; no developer presentation or formal plan amendment was recorded in the minutes. The commission's action is procedural and expresses the city's official stance ahead of the Aug. 21 hearing.
