LaMoure County approves utility bore permit, discusses bridge design and state road grants

The LaMoure County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 1 approved a utility permit allowing Dakota Valley Cooperative to bore under County Road 34 and spent substantial time on road projects and funding opportunities.
Highway Superintendent Darrick Nitschke presented the utility permit application to bore 1,425 feet east of CR 34 at 110th Ave SE; Commissioner Keith Heidinger moved to approve the permit and Commissioner Bruce Klein seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
KLJ engineer Bryan Tykwinski recommended extending the box culvert at the bridge west of Jud rather than installing rails, saying the rails would take up road width and a culvert extension could be eligible for flex‑spending dollars. "A box culvert extension instead of the rails would be a good way to go," Bryan said, and he also recommended reduced‑speed signage at the site.
Nitschke reported recent road work included patching on CR 35, the Nortonville Road and CR 65 north of Jud; the department plans to patch CR 34 between Grand Rapids and CR 61 and will mow county roads next week. He said dust‑pod work on CR 34 is postponed until spring or summer 2025.
Melissa Godlewski told the board she had learned from the state there are grant dollars available for road projects; KLJ staff said they monitor state and federal grant programs and provided the Godlewskis with a copy of the county road project schedule.
No formal funding commitments were made during the meeting; commissioners discussed options and potential eligibility for different funding sources and asked staff and engineering consultants to continue monitoring grant opportunities.
