LaMoure County adopts fire emergency, sets county burn restrictions tied to danger rating

LaMoure County commissioners declared a county fire emergency and adopted burn restrictions during their Oct. 15 meeting after a drought update from DES/911 Coordinator Kimberly Robbins.
Robbins told the board that 71.45% of LaMoure County was in D0 drought designation and a small area in the southeast fell in D1. She also noted that Governor’s Executive Order 2024-06 established a statewide fire emergency effective through Dec. 1, 2024 unless rescinded.
Commissioner Lee Miller moved to accept resolution language declaring a county Fire Emergency and Burn Restrictions effective immediately; the board approved the resolution language. The board then approved a separate motion, by majority roll call, to set county burn restrictions that take effect when the North Dakota Rangeland Fire Danger Rating is High, Very High or Extreme or if a Red Flag Warning is issued; Commissioners Heidinger, Miller and Klein voted yes, Commissioner Flath and Chairman Weigel voted no.
The adopted approach ties local restrictions to the state danger rating and Red Flag Warnings and applies to all cities in LaMoure County until the board rescinds the restriction. The resolution language accepted by the board references the county’s published burn-restriction worksheet and its posting at the state response website.
Next steps: the county will rely on the rangeland fire danger rating and Red Flag Warnings to trigger restrictions; the resolution remains in effect until rescinded or until a date specified by the board.
