LaMoure County notified of Emerald Ash Borer quarantine; Lake LaMoure under blue‑green algae advisory

At the Sept. 3 meeting of the LaMoure County Board of County Commissioners, County Extension Agent Julianne Racine briefed the board on two environmental and public‑health items: an Emerald Ash Borer quarantine and a blue‑green algae advisory for Lake LaMoure.
Racine said the North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) has placed LaMoure County in a quarantine restricting the movement of wood to limit spread of Emerald Ash Borer. She told county officials that anyone caught moving regulated wood could face fines of up to $5,000. Racine recommended that residents who suspect their trees are infested contact the ND Dept. of Agriculture, NDSU Extension, ND Parks & Recreation, NDDES, county services or city officials for guidance and next steps.
Racine also reported that Lake LaMoure has been placed on an advisory for blue‑green algae (cyanobacteria). She said the algae can produce cyanotoxins "which may cause serious health effects in people and animals." The advisory is a caution for residents and visitors to avoid contact with visible scum or discolored water and to keep pets away from affected water until health officials lift the advisory.
No formal board action was recorded on these advisories during the meeting; Racine's presentation was informational and the board discussed inclusion of local agencies in related tower‑rent fee conversations elsewhere on the agenda.
