Ely council retroactively approves letters supporting $10M NDOT earmark; staff reports on multiple funding efforts

The Ely City Council on April 24 retroactively approved letters of support that city staff had sent on short notice to federal lawmakers backing a $10 million transportation earmark to improve U.S. 6 to Majors Station.
Mayor Nathan Robertson told the council the letters were submitted between meetings because program deadlines opened with very short turnaround times. "I would just like to note for the Council and public's benefit that the retroactive approval was due to the deadlines," he said before the council unanimously approved retroactive acceptance of the letters sent to Congressman Mark Amodei and U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen.
City Clerk Jennifer Lee updated the council on other funding items: she said NDOT notified the city that the Federal Highway Administration had confirmed the Campton Street Improvement earmark and that staff is working with the city's congressional delegation to respond to NDOT clarifications needed to finalize the funding agreement. Lee also reported that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gave approval to begin work on an East Ely Water earmark application and that the Porter Group had submitted the city's federal CPF applications prepared by staff.
Council members praised the collaborative effort of staff and Porter Group in preparing applications and letters amid tight deadlines, and asked staff to continue coordination with state and federal partners as application details are finalized.
