Ely — The Ely City Council on Jan. 23 accepted the resignation of Mary Kerner from the Regional Transportation Commission and approved Mayor Nathan Robertson's appointment of Steve Baer to the commission for a term through Dec. 31, 2027.
Mayor Robertson thanked Kerner for her work on contracts and other expertise. "She brought some good expertise on contracts and dug into some stuff while she was there," he said in explaining the resignation acceptance.
In presenting Steve Baer for appointment, the mayor said Baer was the local resident engineer for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), has existing working relationships with transportation officials and — though retired and facing some health issues — was willing to serve. "He does bring a lot of expertise to the board and has a good working relationship with a lot of these people already," Robertson said.
Councilwoman Jerri Lynn Williams-Harper moved to accept Kerner's resignation; Councilwoman Melody Van Camp seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Councilwoman Williams-Harper then moved to approve the mayoral appointment of Steve Baer to the RTC with the term expiring Dec. 31, 2027; Councilwoman Samantha Elliott seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Resident public comment earlier in the meeting expressed opposition to appointing Baer based on a prior NDOT interaction regarding a motel property; the council did not reverse the appointment during the session.
