Ely council tables Verizon/Vertical Bridge site-management request amid legal questions

Ely — The Ely City Council voted Jan. 23 to table a request from Verizon that would have authorized Vertical Bridge to lease, operate and manage a Verizon site owned by the City of Ely.
City Attorney Chris Arabia told the council several legal issues remained unresolved and said he had hoped to have additional information from Verizon's representative before the meeting. "There’s actually a bunch of issues involved, a couple of which he wanted to take to whoever is above him. I was hoping he'd get back to me today and he wasn't able to, so I'm going to ask that it be tabled," Arabia said. He thanked Councilman Dennis Perea and City Clerk Jennifer Lee for their assistance and said he was confident the city would obtain a good outcome.
Councilwoman Samantha Elliott moved to table the request; Councilwoman Melody Van Camp seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. The proposal would have allowed Vertical Bridge to lease Verizon's interests in the site, lease back a portion to Verizon, and possibly sublease space to other wireless and fiber companies; the council took no action on potential subleases or commercial terms at the meeting.
The city attorney did not enumerate the specific legal questions on the record at the meeting. Council did not discuss scheduling a specific follow-up date at the time the item was tabled.
