Operations center making progress; staff brief commissioners on water-main breaks and transition timeline

Staff updated the commission on operations-center construction and recent service incidents, reporting roof decking and structural steel in place and explaining a staged transition once occupancy is achieved.

"They have the roof decking on," the staff member said while walking commissioners through the building layout (shop, training room, locker rooms, and a wash bay). Staff said the lean-to storage on the building's back will be finished soon, parts will be consolidated from outlying buildings, and sewer and water-connection permits are pending to complete the office portion of the building.

On service incidents, staff reported two water-main breaks since the last meeting, both on Sunday nights. The Baxter Street break was repaired in a few hours and did not lose a large volume of water. A separate incident involving what staff called 'motor 91' resulted in substantial water loss; crews replaced about 18 feet of pipe after locating breaks uphill and downstream of the initial site. Staff described the missing pieces and the unusual nature of the failure; commissioners asked about on-hand inventory for common pipe sizes and transition timing.

Staff said they hope for a late-October completion date for the building (the discussion did not specify a year) and estimated one to two months to move equipment and materials after occupancy is obtained. Commissioners praised staff who worked overnight on repairs and agreed to continue monitoring construction progress and service reliability.
