Cemetery director reports higher service counts, restoration projects and Friends fundraising

Karen, the cemetery director, told the Waukesha City Cemetery Commission on Dec. 8 that Prairie Home Cemetery’s operations are busier than last year and that several maintenance and fundraising initiatives are underway.
"Through October year to date, we've had 173 services, which is already more than we had last year," Karen said, noting she could not provide a profit-and-loss statement at the meeting because the finance staff member who prepares it was unavailable.
Karen listed planned and in-progress items: new electric service to a streetlight on Prairie Avenue, a tuckpointing contract awarded for repairs to the chapel parapets (work expected in spring), and a veterans area project for which the Friends of Prairie Home Cemetery are actively fundraising with an installation target of Memorial Day next year.
Representatives of the Friends group said they will hold a Culver's fundraiser the following day (5 to 8 p.m.) and discussed the third annual tombstone trot. During the exchange, participants referenced roughly 190 registrations in one remark and about 120 in another; Karen also said the group places wreaths in the cemetery and estimated both "about 730 wreaths" and "a couple 100 a year" in different parts of the discussion.
Karen said she is working with the finance director to adjust the budget-report format to match the cemetery’s needs and that she will provide updated service totals for the next meeting. The commission set its next meeting for Feb. 9.
The items Karen reported may affect maintenance schedules and fundraising timelines but no formal action was taken on these project items at the Dec. 8 meeting.
