The East Point Planning and Zoning Commission on July 16 approved a stream-buffer and setback variance for a drainage project at 3207 South Martin Street (project filed by Michael Christopher; presented by Beth Ann Weinberg of GHD).
Weinberg described a concept to install an underground pipe along the existing ditch that currently conveys off-site water from the former Owens-Illinois outfall, backfill the ditch to two feet above the maximum groundwater table and route the off-site flow into the city sewer. She said the project’s goal is to "stop the groundwater from seeping and becoming surface water" and to eliminate the open ditch pathway.
Staff recommended approval. Commissioners asked whether the project would divert water onto neighbors; the project team said the design would not channel water to adjacent properties and that the flow would be directed north into the city sewer. Weinberg said the team will pursue required wetlands and other permits.
The commission voted to accept staff's recommendation and approved the variance. Future steps include the wetlands permitting process and standard permitting reviews for the pipe and backfill work.
