Council holds first reading on truck-route changes, reviews tree-removal bids and approves clock repairs

The Kanawha City Council on July 14 held the first reading of Ordinance #071426, which proposes amendments to the city’s truck routes. Council Member Phyllis Jordanger moved to approve the first reading; Council Member Dana Kraft seconded and all members present voted in favor. The ordinance remains at first reading and will return for additional readings and final action.
During the same meeting, the council opened three sealed bids for tree removal services but postponed award of a contract to allow further evaluation of the scope of work and options. The council directed the City Clerk to apply for a Trees Forever Grant and an Alliant Energy Community Tree Planting Grant to help fund removal of ash and other dead or dying trees and to support replacement plantings.
Council members reviewed two quotes for radar traffic-control equipment and took no action at this meeting. The council accepted a $871.76 quote from K & C Electric to repair the town clock; Superintendent of Public Works Ryan Oleson reported he has narrowed the location of the damaged underground electrical line that will assist in completing repairs.
The council also discussed pursuing a water leakage ordinance to address unusually high water use from leaks and directed the City Clerk to draft an ordinance for the next regular meeting.
