LaMoure County advances road work, orders 35 mph truck limit on CR 63

LaMoure County commissioners on Aug. 20 heard multiple updates from Highway Superintendent Darrick Nitschke about ongoing and planned road work and approved a new 35 mph truck speed limit on County Road 63.
Nitschke told the board the crew had begun grinding on County Road 35 for patching and expected roughly eight working days remaining on County Road 34 before moving work toward Highway 281. He said Knife River will begin paving the Jud Road project with work hours from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
"We estimate the new salt and sand storage building will pay for itself within three to four years," Nitschke said in his report to the commission, urging the board to consider the investment for winter maintenance cost savings.
Nitschke also presented a contractor quote for a two-mile overlay from Highway 281 to Nortonville at $390,000, which he said was higher than earlier projections. Commissioners decided to delay moving forward with that project because a ballot measure to abolish property tax appears on the November ballot and could affect county funding.
Commissioner Bruce Klein moved to set the truck speed limit to 35 mph on CR 63 from Highway 13 to Highway 46; Commissioner Robert Flath seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
The board was also informed that stop signs for CR 34 are on order.
Next steps: county staff will continue paving work on Jud Road as scheduled, defer further action on the Nortonville overlay until after the election outcome is clearer, and pursue the salt-and-sand storage proposal for later consideration.
