Library director frames branches as community 'places where connections happen' and highlights 30-branch programming

Sukrie Grossoni, director of the San Antonio Public Library, told the Community Health Committee that the library system’s 30 branches are a ‘‘place where connections happen’’ and reviewed programing, partnerships and recent events the system uses to engage residents across neighborhoods.

Grossoni described the library network’s role as a community catalyst: multilingual programming, partnerships with Metro Health and other city departments, the library’s use as voting locations at 19 sites, and collaborative cultural programming with institutions including the city’s museum. She cited examples of large recent events (a six-branch Holocaust program that drew more than 500 attendees and a series of Hispanic-focused programs) and said the branches provide virtual and in-person clubs, children’s author visits and curriculum-linked services.

"La biblioteca pública como un lugar donde las conexiones suceden," Grossoni said, explaining how branches host everything from adult basic-education efforts to intergenerational programs that pair youth with older adults. Councilmembers asked about pilot programs other Texas cities use (such as tool or instrument lending); Grossoni said staff will follow up with details through an assistant and that local branch leaders can evaluate pilots on a site-by-site basis.

Council members praised branch renovations and emphasized libraries’ roles in access to services and after-school programming; the committee did not take formal action on library items at this meeting.
