West Bend-Mallard board adopts FY 2027 budget and school calendar

The West Bend-Mallard Community School District Board held public hearings and approved the FY 2027 budget and the district’s 2026–27 school calendar during its April 14, 2026 meeting.
Superintendent Paul Peppmeier reported the district expects around 336 students in FY 2027, roughly seven more than the prior year, and outlined budget pressures including enrollment changes, staff turnover, pending legislation and facility upgrade or maintenance needs. The public hearing on the budget opened at 7:18 p.m. and closed at 7:27 p.m. with no comments from members of the public. The board then voted to approve the FY 2027 budget on a motion by Dave Bruellman, seconded by Chris Montag; the motion carried.
A separate public hearing on the 2026–27 school calendar began at 7:28 p.m. and closed at 7:33 p.m. The board approved a calendar that sets the first day of school for Aug. 24, 2026; schedules three days off for Thanksgiving, two weeks off for the Christmas break, Spring Break for March 15–19 (calendar year corrected to 2027) and a tentative last day of May 21, 2027. Dawn Schmidt moved to approve the calendar and Lisa Traub seconded; the motion carried.
Board members and administrators noted the budget will remain sensitive to enrollment and legislative changes; the superintendent provided IASB materials to the board for further review of policy and legislative proposals that could affect future budgets.
