Mayor highlights pedestrian-safety push; residents raise e-bike and fireworks concerns

Pedestrian safety and neighborhood concerns featured in reports and public comment at Aberdeen’s June 4 council meeting.
Mayor Cannon told the council and attendees that several pedestrian accidents had occurred recently and that the township plans a number of safety improvements. He referenced an “outstanding” report prepared by SADD high school students offering ideas the township plans to implement, and said he intends to spend the summer advancing traffic-safety projects before the school year begins.
Township Manager Bryan Russell also briefed the council on the summer jobs program (which he said was successful last year) and ongoing spring and summer projects.
During public comment, Mary Jane Mercovich (Beach Drive) expressed concern about e-bikes using the seawall; Mayor Cannon said e-bikes must be registered beginning in July and Chief Lloyd spoke briefly about the topic. Mercovich also pointed out a misspelling on a sign and asked that it be corrected. Jane Heron (Beach Drive) asked the council to address fireworks; Mayor Cannon said information and public education could be provided on township social media.
No formal action resulted from the public comments at the June 4 meeting; council discussion on pedestrian safety centered on implementing student recommendations and planned improvements.
