The Atkinson Recreation Commission voted 4-0 to open most town playing fields effective April 15, but left Baseball Field 1 closed because of wet conditions. The decision followed a recommendation from Ted Stewart, the town’s director of public works.
The board also approved a draft Sponsor Banners Placement Policy on a motion by Cris, seconded by Jim, by a 4-0 vote. The policy governs placement of sponsor signage at town athletic facilities; the commission did not record additional specifications in the minutes.
Commissioners reviewed a spring field-opening proposal from Mission Turf Services for edging and grooming three baseball fields and one softball field at a cost of $6,400. Jim said he would notify the contractor to proceed. Separately, AYBS reported by email that dugouts and fence doors at Baseball Field 1 have been completed, though the field itself remains too wet to open.
The actions ensure most youth and adult league play can begin while Baseball Field 1 remains under recovery for drainage and surface restoration. The commission did not record any amendments or dissenting votes.
Next step: contractor scheduling and on-the-ground inspections before full use of the fields.
