Winside principals flag chronic absenteeism, review ACT data and curriculum alignment

Elementary Principal April Knust and High School Principal David Schmit reported to the Winside Board on Nov. 10 that the district is reviewing assessment data and focusing on chronic absenteeism.
Knust summarized elementary activities including ACT testing, Book Blast, hearing screenings, a Halloween fashion show, the UNL leadership summit, Math night and Aptegy "Rooms" communications statistics. Knust said the leadership team has identified test scores and chronic absenteeism as high-priority items.
Schmit congratulated the quiz bowl team for a fourth straight conference championship, summarized fall sports season successes and described ELA teachers work on curriculum alignment; he said high school staff will review recent ACT data as part of improvement planning.
Both principals presented updated enrollment figures and discussed how chronic absenteeism is defined, how it affects the districts AQuESTT ranking and ways to better inform parents about the negative consequences of student absences. The board did not record any formal action on attendance at the meeting, but principals framed it as a continuing area for improvement and School Improvement/MTSS work.
