Parents raise volleyball discipline concerns; administrators outline curriculum support and communications plans

At the Oct. 13 Winside Public Schools Board meeting, resident Melissa Jeffery urged the board to address a situation involving volleyball team members, citing concerns about school policy, communication and player consequences.
Melissa Jeffery (address listed on the sign-in sheet) told the board she was concerned about how the matter was handled and about scheduling and consequences for players. The transcript records the concern in the public comment portion of the meeting; no disciplinary decision was recorded during the meeting.
Resident Trevor Wylie asked the board and administration for information about the cost of cheer uniforms. In response, school administration and board members discussed pledging support to help start the cheer program, including fundraising and student contributions toward uniform costs.
During principal reports, Elementary Principal April Knust said the district will work with ESU 1 on classroom walk-throughs and staff evaluations, will implement Aptegy "Rooms" as a family communication tool and is using preschool assessments, Special Education reporting and MAP testing to monitor progress. Knust said that one elementary and one high school grade showing the most MAP testing growth will be rewarded with a pizza party.
High School Principal David Schmit thanked the student council and Mr. Gubbels for planning Homecoming, noted a recent blood drive and FFA and FBLA activities, and said the district plans to supplement a recently purchased ELA curriculum with additional grammar support. Schmit told the board that pricing for one-year and six-year purchase options will be brought back for review.
Superintendent Jeff Hoesing briefly discussed plans to open the weight room to the public with steps to protect equipment and ensure safe use; he also noted that all board members plan to attend the NASB state education conference and that certified staff negotiations will begin in October.
The board did not take formal disciplinary action during the meeting. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the board room.
