Board hears proposal to log district land behind Glade Elementary

The Webster County Board of Education heard a nonvoting informational proposal from a staff member about timber on district-owned land behind Glade Elementary and discussed next steps including a legal review and competitive bidding.
Staff member told the board she met with Daniel Hedges of Hamer Lumber Company, who observed significant high-value timber on a parcel owned by Webster County Schools behind Glade Elementary. "At minimum $10,000 worth of logs there," staff member relayed, quoting Hedges, and said a more precise estimate would require permission to enter the parcel and a detailed appraisal.
Board members raised environmental and recreational concerns. One member warned that timbering in similar areas had previously caused runoff and soil damage: "It ruined that property," the member said of a past local logging project, and asked about possible impacts on bike trails and Head Start facilities near the parcel.
