Winside Public Schools board authorizes president to negotiate with April Knust for superintendent role

The Winside Public Schools Board of Education on Dec. 10 authorized Board President Jon Jaeger to negotiate with April Knust for the district's superintendent position after interviewing three finalists and reviewing staff and administration feedback.
Board President Jon Jaeger called the special meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. at Winside Public School. The board—Jon Jaeger, Landon Grothe, Diane Frederick, Tarrin Quinn, Zach Brokaw and Kate Falk—with guest member Shari Becker from NASB recorded attendance and approved the agenda on a motion by board member Landon Grothe, seconded by board member Zach Brokaw; the motion passed unanimously.
Interviews for the superintendent position began during the meeting. The board interviewed candidates identified in the minutes as Candidate A, Candidate C and Candidate G; the board was informed that Candidate H had withdrawn from consideration. After the interviews, the board reviewed summaries of each finalist's strengths that had been provided by the administration team and a staff group.
Board member Kate Falk moved, and board member Tarrin Quinn seconded, a motion to allow Board President Jon Jaeger to negotiate with April Knust for the superintendent position. The motion carried unanimously (ayes: Brokaw, Frederick, Quinn, Falk, Grothe and Jaeger; nays: none). The board then entered a second executive session "to discuss negotiations as it relates to the position of superintendent," on a motion by Falk and second by Frederick; that motion also passed unanimously.
Earlier in the evening the board entered an executive session at 5:38 p.m. on a motion by Grothe "for the prevention of needless injury to the reputation of individuals and to protect public interest," a personnel-related exception to open meetings law recorded in the minutes; the board returned to open session at 6:02 p.m. The second executive session began at 6:03 p.m. and the board left executive session at 6:10 p.m.
The meeting concluded with a motion by Grothe, seconded by Brokaw, to adjourn at 6:19 p.m. The board announced its next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, in the board room at 7:30 p.m.
