Webster County schools schedule active-shooter training with simulated gunfire; staff to hold trainings at four schools in October

District staff told the Webster County Board of Education on Sept. 22 that the district would hold active-shooter training at four schools over separate days in October and asked the board for approval and awareness ahead of public inquiries.
Staff described the schedule as Hacker Valley on Oct. 16, Glade on Oct. 20, Webster Springs Elementary on Oct. 22, and Webster County High School on Oct. 23. "Each school will have the training on the dates that I have given you," a staff member said, adding that the trainings would be for staff only and that the district would designate those days as "virtual learning days" for students so teachers could be trained in the morning and be available by phone or email in the afternoon.
On the training content, staff told the board the exercises would be in-depth and coordinated with the local sheriff's office, state police and neighboring counties. The staff member said the training would include simulated gunfire using simunition rounds "to let them know this is what a gunshot sounds like inside of a building," and mentioned shotgun, AR-15 and pistol simulation rounds. The presentation emphasized tactics and response practice to prepare staff for possible active-shooter events.
Substitutes and noninstructional personnel were invited to attend one training session to increase preparedness across roles. The board approved the proposed dates and approach during the new-business discussion. District staff said they will provide clear explanations in advance to avoid public surprise and will coordinate times with principals.
