Webster County updates: SmartPass app, bus and HVAC repairs, and $6.5M SBA CTE submission planned

District staff gave the Webster County Board an operations update at the Sept. 8 meeting covering transportation, facilities, instructional supports and planned capital requests.
Staff said one district bus in Mineral Wells is awaiting cameras and a state inspection and that another bus is under construction and will arrive soon. Benchmark testing began this week, and Webster County High School has launched a digital hall-pass application called SmartPass that allows teachers to sign students out on an iPad and tracks frequency and duration of departures from class.
"We'll be asking for right around $6,500,000," staff said, describing an SBA needs-project submission to support CTE additions that would expand ROTC facilities, add diesel/gas mechanic training space and include agricultural instructional space if the project is selected. Staff said the application and amendment materials were submitted and that selections are expected in November.
Staff also announced Dr. Allison Pyle had emailed a link indicating the Jeff Ezel Fund is now accepting applications for Webster County teachers who wish to apply for classroom or project funding.
Board members and staff discussed routine maintenance items, including the Hacker Valley AC compressor parts and a maintenance schedule, as well as scoreboard and press-box repairs at Ledge Springs Elementary. Booster fundraising and homecoming preparations were also reported as part of the operational update.
The board received these updates as informational; the SBA application represents a large capital request that would require future board approvals and external agency selection before any construction or spending occurs.
