Webster County Board approves grants, student-teacher MOU, tutor and liaison postings

The Webster County Board of Education voted to approve several new-business items at its Sept. 8 meeting, including grant applications, a student-teacher memorandum of understanding, postings for extracurricular and liaison positions and an updated compensation policy.
Board Chair called the items to the floor and the board voted to approve agenda items 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. The items approved included: authorization for Roberts High School’s proposed health-science class to apply for STEAM Power West Virginia and Creative Aging grant funding; approval of a memorandum of understanding with Plymouth State University for student teachers in the 2025–26 school year; permission to create and post lunchtime tutor positions at Webster County High School (initial posting expected to start with roughly three positions, funded in part with Title I dollars); permission to create and post a countywide McKinney-Vento family engagement liaison; and adoption of an updated Board of Education compensation policy after a 30-day public comment period.
On the McKinney-Vento liaison posting, staff said the packet includes a job description, schedule and documentation log and emphasized the position will work "in conjunction with the county attendance director." The board debated overlap with the attendance director’s duties and directed staff to revise wording if needed before posting.
Staff described the lunchtime-tutor pay as aligned with the regular hourly schedule (discussion referenced amounts transcribed as '20' and '25'); staff said Title I funds are among the expected funding sources for those extracurricular positions. The board was told initial tutor staffing would likely be limited as the positions are piloted.
The board also heard that Hacker Valley recently received a STEAM Power grant and that the McGraw Hill SAT-prep material line (previously discussed) reflects past budget items. The motion to approve the listed new-business items carried after members signaled their support.
The board’s approvals were procedural (votes to authorize applications and post positions) rather than final contract awards; where funding or amounts were discussed, the board recorded estimated figures during the meeting.
