VALLEY — At its July 16 meeting the Valley School District board approved revisions to the district’s electronic-resources policy and finalized two health-response policies while recording discussion about how to address artificial intelligence in instruction.
Superintendent Dr. Mandi Rehn presented a revised Policy 2022 — Electronic Resources and Internet Safety — for a first reading and asked the board to approve so student handbooks could be updated. Director Doug Elledge voiced reservations about the WASDA recommendations regarding AI and proposed that AI be presented as a required subject teaching "what it is, how to use it and how to do without it." The board directed Dr. Rehn to draft an additional paragraph reflecting the discussion and email it to the board. Paul Voelker moved to approve the revised policy with the added statement; Crystal Hubert seconded and the motion carried.
On second reading the board approved revised Policies 3424 (Opioid-Related Overdose Reversal) and 3420 (Anaphylaxis Prevention and Response) on a motion by Doug Elledge and second by Paul Voelker; the minutes record the motions as carried.
