Council approves consent items, hires and appointments including KMEA director appointment
Summary
The council approved routine consent items and personnel actions: agenda and minutes approval, appropriations ordinance 2026-03, Rotary donation and park pad approval, July 4 permits and free swim, summer employee hires and pay scale, several appointments including a KMEA director (Fred Brungardt, with one abstention), a delinquent account write-off and cemetery mowing contract.
At its March 2 meeting the Washington City Council approved a package of consent and routine items including acceptance of a $3,000 donation from the Washington Rotary Club to the city EMS and permission for the Rotary and Washington County Fair Board to install a concrete pad near the pickleball court (motion by Pinnick, second by Kern; ayes unanimous).
The council also approved the agenda amendment, February meeting minutes and Appropriations Ordinance 2026-03. Taylor Miller’s request for Fourth of July loud-speaker and street-use permits and a free swim day on July 4 were approved. The council adopted the 2026 pool employee pay scale and approved hiring Garrison Sand as pool manager and lifeguards and summer staff at the hourly rates presented. Motions to hire summer help (Seth White and Easton Finlayson) were approved.
Mayoral appointments approved included Scott Weber to the tree board and Lee Simon to the Washington Ball Association. The council appointed Fred Brungardt to the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency Board of Directors effective April 1, 2026, through April 30, 2028; Council Member Bryan Loberg recorded an abstention on that vote. Other votes included writing off a delinquent account for Hormann ($2,894.19) and awarding the cemetery mowing contract to Christian Hanekom/TurfJet for $1,650.
