MSAD 60 board elects Peg Wheeler as chair; public comment sharply criticizes district performance

MSAD 60 board members followed historic rotation procedures at their July 16 meeting and moved to install a new chair and vice chair for the 2026–27 school year.
A nomination was made and seconded to advance the current vice chair into the chair role; members agreed and the motion to appoint Peg Wheeler as chair was formalized. Peg Wheeler then took the oath of office: "I, Peg Wheeler, do affirm that I will faithfully discharge ... the duties incumbent upon me as chair of the MSAD 60 board of directors," the oath recorded.
During the public input period, resident Matthew Leggett spoke for three minutes. Leggett praised some graduation and work-program initiatives but delivered a strong critique about academic results: "We're bottom 10 in the nation," he said, urging the administration and board to acknowledge shortcomings in student reading and to allow honest self-reflection rather than upbeat presentations.
Following public comment, the board moved and seconded to add an executive session on personnel matters under MRSA 4056-B; the board approved adding that item to the agenda. The body also moved, seconded and approved the minutes of the June 24 meeting.
No formal disciplinary or personnel action was reported during the open meeting; the board scheduled the added executive session to address personnel matters in closed session.
