Sterling approves story walk at Library Park using portion of Carnegie grant

Library Director Debbie Gibson and Park Advisory Board Chairman Dwight Nichols presented a proposal to install a story walk at Library Park, funded in part by a $10,000 grant the Sterling Free Public Library received from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Gibson told the commission the Library Board plans to use a portion of the Carnegie grant for the interactive outdoor feature, which places successive illustrated story panels along a park path to promote literacy and outdoor play. The Board intends to install one free-standing pedestal to mark the start of the walk and attach successive story stations to the park’s metal fence using durable weatherproof vinyl covers and zip ties.
The Park Advisory Board reviewed the plan on Feb. 24 and recommended Library Park as the preferred location. The Library Board will cover the costs of installation and ongoing maintenance; the City may provide labor to install the pedestal at no charge. Commissioner Clint Bundy moved and Commissioner Todd Rowland seconded to approve the installation; the motion carried 4-0.
Ending: The commission approved the story-walk installation and left responsibility for funding and maintenance with the Library Board; the City’s role is limited to potential installation labor.
