Redington Shores parks panel proposes nature-themed art for message kiosks

Members of the Redington Shores Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee on Aug. 28 discussed ideas to improve the town’s message kiosks and beach-access signage by commissioning artwork and adopting a common theme.
Loretta Fricks said she contacted Todd Wellman of Creative Pinellas; she reported that Creative Pinellas does not provide project funding but can match artists to projects and oversee the work. Ginger McQuigg said she would investigate resources at the Pinellas County Arts Council. Mary Gerst proposed a unifying theme called "Nature's Beach" for kiosks, beach-access signs and other town materials.
Committee members proposed that artists paint kiosks (avoiding glass) and include at least one turtle and one sea bird on each piece, either camouflaged in dunes or prominently displayed. Cathy Sypniewski suggested using creative identifiers such as bird images or names like "Pelican Way" for beach-access points instead of numerical labels.
Loretta reported that the next steps are to determine how many kiosks the town owns, what style of artwork to pursue, and what funds might be available. Committee members discussed whether the town or PAR volunteers would install signage and agreed further coordination with town staff is needed.
The committee approved the Aug. 14 minutes at the start of the meeting and will reconvene Sept. 11, 2024, at 5 p.m. for further planning.
