Redington Shores parks advisory committee flags electrical and landscaping issues at Nature Park

The Redington Shores Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee on Aug. 28 identified electrical and landscaping problems at Nature Park that officials said must be fixed before the town proceeds with new projects.
Loretta Fricks, a member of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee, said Duke Energy inspected the park’s electrical system and made repairs but found electrical boxes obstructed by plant growth. Fricks said the boxes require a 3-foot buffer to operate safely and that the Town Manager will contact the landscape company to correct the situation. Committee members also noted that a weed barrier had not been installed in the planting beds.
The committee agreed staff should resolve the landscaping and electrical clearance issues with the contractor before approving any additional work at the park. The record shows the group approved minutes from the Aug. 14 meeting at the start of the Aug. 28 session.
Committee members framed the concerns as both a maintenance and safety matter: overgrown vegetation around electrical equipment can impede repairs and may affect reliability. No schedule or cost estimate for remediation was provided in the meeting minutes; the Town Manager was assigned follow-up action (contacting the landscape company).
The Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee set its next meeting for Sept. 11, 2024, at 5 p.m. and adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
