Redington Shores sets tentative millage at 1.6896 mills; schedules Sept. 4 and 16 budget hearings

The Town of Redington Shores Board of Commissioners on July 24 tentatively set the ad valorem millage rate at 1.6896 mills and scheduled two public hearings on the town budget and millage for Sept. 4 and Sept. 16 at 6 p.m., voting 5-0 to adopt the tentative rate.

Town Clerk Margaret Carey read a draft resolution proposing the rate. Town Administrator Mike McGlothlin told commissioners that state law requires the town to set a tentative millage each year and to hold two public hearings on the millage and budget; staff recommended the 1.6896 mills figure and the September hearing dates. The final millage rate adopted later this year cannot exceed the tentatively adopted rate but may be lower.

Commissioner Tom Kapper moved to approve the proposed hearing dates and to set the tentative millage rate at 1.6896 mills; Vice Mayor Commissioner Joe Licata seconded the motion. Commissioner CJ Hoyt asked how the hearing dates are established. Administrator McGlothlin and Town Attorney Rob Eschenfelder, participating via Zoom, said the dates are determined by state statute and by reporting deadlines set by the county property appraiser’s office.

The Board voted unanimously, 5-0, to adopt the tentative millage rate and confirm the Sept. 4 and Sept. 16 hearings at 6 p.m. No members of the public spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Mayor Commissioner Lisa Hendrickson noted July 24 was the 60th anniversary of the Indian Shores Police Department; staff marked the anniversary by delivering a cake to the department. The meeting adjourned at 6:13 p.m. Minutes were submitted by Town Clerk Margaret Carey and show an approval date of Aug. 14, 2024.

The next formal steps are the two public hearings in September, after which the Board may adopt a final millage rate at or below the tentatively set 1.6896 mills.
