Sterling reports near-complete wastewater project; KDOT to repair downtown pavement

City staff reported wastewater improvements are largely complete with a lift-station test planned March 3, construction bids for a water project open March 12, and KDOT agreed to repair deteriorated downtown pavement and re-stripe at no cost to the city.
City Manager Ian Hutcheson provided updates on several infrastructure items at the March 2 Sterling City Commission meeting.
Hutcheson said the KMW wastewater improvement project is largely complete and that the lift station was scheduled for testing on March 3 with water supplied by the Sterling Volunteer Fire Department. He added that the water improvement project will advance with a construction contract bid opening planned for March 12 at 2:00 p.m. at City Hall, to be run by staff from BG Consultants.
Hutcheson also reported that downtown Broadway Avenue pavement under deteriorated parking-stall striping had been inspected by Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). KDOT staff determined the pavement defect appeared to be the result of deficient material or application by a subcontractor and agreed to repair the pavement and re-stripe parking stalls at no cost to the city. The work is anticipated in summer 2026; Hutcheson said the city may request changes to stall count, width and placement when work is scheduled.
In governing-body comments, commissioners discussed the April 18 Love Sterling/Citywide Clean-up and possible changes to collection logistics because the city has struggled to recruit volunteer vehicles for curbside pickups. Commissioner Clint Bundy raised pedestrian safety concerns for early-morning walkers along the south side of Sterling Lake on E. Garfield Ave; Mayor Brian Inwood asked staff to review water-valve repair and exercise schedules to reduce service outages. Hutcheson said staff will follow up with Public Works and the Sterling Police to address these issues.
