Board discusses sealing gazebos, shade structures and Dysart Park renovations; notes grant constraints

The Sterling Park Advisory Board spent much of its Feb. 24 meeting reviewing maintenance items and potential upgrades across several city parks, with no formal votes taken on those ideas.
At Sterling Lake Park the board discussed sealing wooden gazebos and benches, restocking dog‑waste bag stations regularly, installing new water fountains, and adding seasonal decorative lighting. Vice‑Chairwoman McKenzie Farney raised shade needs at Evergreen Park and reported that a grant specialist estimated a playground‑sized shade structure could cost about $50,000 but warned that inactive municipal water wells within the park could complicate grant eligibility. City Manager Ian Hutcheson added that a shade structure donated by the Sterling Rotary Club remains to be installed.
Board members also revisited shade needs at Library Park and confirmed that library accessibility improvements currently being planned could take priority for remaining Carnegie funds. Lynne Bush described Sterling Main Street’s proposed renovation of Dysart Park—expanding an existing mural, installing a brick patio/performance area, and planting additional bushes—and recommended delaying a rededication until renovations near completion. Chairman Dwight Nichols said he opposed planting additional trees in Dysart Park; Board Member Jed Miller suggested planting butterfly‑attracting bushes instead. Board Member Kent Anthony noted that railroad easements near Peace Park limit options for major improvements.
City Manager Hutcheson asked board members to submit ideas for the Love Sterling event on April 18, 2026. Chairman Nichols said the second quarter meeting is tentatively scheduled for May 14, 2026 and urged the board to set dates for the remaining quarters. No formal actions were taken on the maintenance or renovation items at this meeting.
