Commission approves Main Street Market Day permit but bars Broadway closure

The Sterling City Commission on Feb. 16 approved a special event permit for the Sterling Chamber of Commerce / Sterling Main Street (SCMS) to hold Main Street Market Day on May 2, 2026, but rejected SCMS's request to close Broadway Avenue for the event.
Dennis Wilkie, SCMS vice president, described the 2025 event's strong turnout and said SCMS seeks a pedestrian-friendly layout with vendor space, a kid's zone and performance stages. SCMS requested closing Broadway Avenue from Jackson to Jefferson between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to allow more vendor space and safer pedestrian circulation. Commissioners expressed concerns about rerouting truck traffic to nearby streets in poor condition, curb damage from large-turn maneuvers, restricted alley access for open businesses, and loss of parking on Broadway.
After discussion, Commissioner Todd Rowland moved and Commissioner Richard L. Jones Jr. seconded a motion to approve the special event permit without closing Broadway Avenue and to close Main Street and Monroe Street east and west of Broadway to the alleyways during the event; the motion carried 5-0. Commissioners thanked SCMS for organizing the event.
