Upper Providence board reviews Bird Town goals and a project tracker ahead of certification work

Volunteers and committee members briefed the Upper Providence Park Board on steps to pursue Bird Town recognition and the specific actions that can be documented for scoring.
Lily, who reviewed the Bird Town project tracker for the board, said she had gone through the five strategies and stripped each goal into attached strategies to show which tasks were already complete and which would be feasible to pursue. "I took each of the goals and strip that are attached to each strategy... there are five strategies and then within the five strategies there are multiple goals," she said. Lily recommended focusing first on items that are already done or are easy to document, such as installing birdhouses, removing invasive species and placing Bird Town street signs.
Board members noted existing work they could document: the township already has a Bird Town street sign installed and ongoing meadow and riparian-buffer efforts in Montclair that could be counted. Staff and volunteers discussed documentation requirements and whether the Bird Town program required proof when scoring actions; Lily and others said some items can be logged as completed activities while others — particularly school-based actions — may require additional coordination.
The board identified local outreach partners (including Wild Birds Unlimited at Providence Town Center and Stewart's Bird Farm) and discussed coordinating events such as a bird festival and cross-town collaboration. Members agreed to review Lily’s highlighted tracker and return with a list of achievable items at the next meeting.
The board asked staff to compile the highlighted items and plan an annual report for submission early next year to document points and supporting photos.
