The Board of Trustees of Roberts School District No. 5 voted Jan. 29 to accept a letter of resignation from Superintendent Alex Ator, effective June 30, 2025, and discussed options for administrative staffing going forward.
At the start of the Jan. 29 special meeting, Chair Michelle Swansborough read a student letter urging stronger school–community connections. The board then moved into staffing discussions after Superintendent Ator said the Office of Public Instructions staffing guidance for a district this size could allow a quarter‑time superintendent, meaning the superintendent would be on site about one day per week. "The staffing requirements from the Office of Public Instruction for administration for a school our size is to have a quarter-time superintendent," Ator said.
Community members and staff raised concerns about reduced on-site leadership. Ed Zink, a member of the Discipline Committee, said the committee has been meeting and expressed doubt that a one‑day‑a‑week administrator would be sufficient to handle student discipline. "There has never not been an administrator in the building as long as Ive known," Chair Swansborough said during the discussion, underscoring community expectations for consistent on‑site leadership.
Trustee Joel Bertolino moved to accept a letter of support for Ator; Trustee Brad Norman seconded the motion, which the board carried unanimously. The board then voted to accept Ators resignation effective June 30, 2025; the motion passed unanimously. Chair Swansborough thanked Ator for his service to the district.
Swansborough said the board has solicited cost estimates from third parties to conduct a superintendent search and that responses are pending. Superintendent Ator and several speakers recommended forming a committee and surveying staff about administrative needs before making final structural changes.
The board called an executive session later in the meeting to address a student complaint under policy and adjourned the special meeting at 8:30 p.m.
What happens next: the district will consider search contract bids and has signaled it may form a committee and survey staff on the preferred administrative structure before hiring Ators successor.
