Frankfort weighs privatization and capacity increases for residential solid waste after resident complaint

During citizen comments Andrew Ferguson said he and his large family have been experiencing issues with Solid Waste service and “not having enough carts.” The comment prompted follow-up from commissioners and staff.
Sara Anderson, Director of Public Works, and Byron Roberts, Solid Waste Superintendent, presented options for residential garbage collection going forward. Presentations included the option to privatize collection or to increase the capacity of the current Solid Waste Department; the discussion covered capital and operational trade-offs but no dollar amounts were presented at the work session.
Mayor Layne Wilkerson requested staff provide the maximum capital cost for a year. Commissioner Katima Smith-Willis asked staff to explore Mr. Ferguson’s complaint specifically. The Board will consider options and the requested information at the January voting meeting and the item was requested for inclusion on the January Regular Meeting agenda.
