Roberts School District No. 5 trustees voted unanimously Oct. 23 to approve a senior class trip to Mesa, Arizona, and to allow students to access class funds for travel and lodging.
Members of the senior class presented their March 28'0, 2025 itinerary and financial plan. Student TJ Chirrick told the board the class has raised $11,482, the trip cost is $9,022 for 13 participants, and the remaining funds would be left for graduation expenses. Superintendent Alex Ator warned that students may each need a Real ID or passport and that booking all passengers on a single flight may be difficult.
The board’s approval, made at the meeting in the Roberts School library, came after a motion by Michael Bissonnette and second by Joel Bertolino. Chair Michelle Swansborough said the board wanted the class to be able to book flights and housing as soon as possible.
Why it matters: Approving access to class funds lets students begin booking travel and secures the trip timeline; the board highlighted logistics and documentation (Real ID/passport) as items for students and chaperones to confirm before departure.
Superintendent Ator and the class identified Randy and Charlotte DeVries as chaperones. The board did not place additional conditions on the travel authorization at the meeting.
