Volunteers and students help with park maintenance; committee plans tree work and other improvements
Summary
Committee members reported on Community Service Day volunteer projects, thanked THS agriculture students for repainting a picnic table, noted drainage work and conservation steps, and discussed tree trimming and a possible tree-stand improvement project with plans for a mid-August meeting with city staff.
Mary Winder reported that on May 2 high school and grade school students participated in Community Service Day at Troy Community Park. Volunteer tasks included spreading wood chips, raking the sand volleyball court, washing the restroom building walls, picking up sticks and litter, cleaning the shelter house, and resetting rocks in the park's rock snake. The committee sent thank-you notes to both schools.
The THS agriculture students, under the direction of their instructor Ms. Bruce, repainted a picnic table top in the shelter house; the committee thanked Ms. Bruce, the students and the City of Troy for providing blue paint. Winder noted the committee was unable to raise and straighten a concrete picnic table north of the playground during the event.
Jackie Peden reported that the black area on the restroom wall is gone. The city crew dug a trench around the shelter house and placed concrete blocks outside the wall to divert water and reduce sediment washing onto the shelter house floor, work Peden had requested.
On tree management, Selena Smith and Mary Winder met with Jim Horner on May 13 to mark branches and small trees for removal. Horner said some work could be done now and some would wait until winter; committee members favored keeping some canopy. The committee discussed exploring a tree-stand improvement that could include replacing locust trees with species such as oak, and hopes to hold a meeting in mid-August with Mayor Brissette, Horner, Luke Terry and others to discuss tree plans.
Other community programming items recorded: the proposed restroom mural is deferred until the school year, volleyball-court repairs were tabled until the next meeting and Jackie Peden will investigate the geocache location. Mary Winder will ask Jennifer Whetstine about printing more trail maps; possible grant sources mentioned were Rainbow Communications and T-Mobile Hometown grants. The committee scheduled its next meeting for June 26, 2025 at 6 p.m.
