Stanton County board approves LETR teacher training, authorizes $800 per certified teacher

The Stanton County Unified School District #452 Board of Education voted May 12 to fund LETR (Law Enforcement Torch Run) training for K–6 teachers, with the district to pay $800 per certified teacher and $750 per visit for the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center to deliver in-service sessions.
Superintendent Trenton Horn said LETR training will be required for K–6 teachers by the end of 2028 and that Bethany College’s free program had no space for additional participants in the current round. Presenters Janelle Wilkerson and Kyla Cook described Southwest Plains’ proposal to offer trainings, including four sessions that could be scheduled during in-service days. The presenters and administration recommended offering participation to paraprofessionals and certain High Plains cooperative employees even though only certified teachers would receive license renewal credit.
Bret Kendrick moved to approve the $800-per-teacher fee and the $750 per-trip charge for the service center to provide in-service trainings; Val Zumudio seconded and the motion carried 7-0. The board asked administrators to work with the service center to schedule sessions and to report back on participation and any grant opportunities that could offset costs.
The board noted that Bethany College had offered a grant program for teacher participants but that the district could not access that cohort in this round; administration said it was pursuing additional options to reduce district expense where possible. The training approval sets an internal target for certified teachers to complete LETR training before 2028 as part of professional-development planning.
