Residents urge Calhoun County to act on ICE enforcement and report trail damage

Several residents used citizen's time at the March 19 Calhoun County Board of Commissioners meeting to press the board on immigration enforcement and local park enforcement.

Chris Freeland, who identified himself from Fredonia Township, urged the board to consider symbolic or policy actions like resolutions calling for DOJ compliance or a local ban on ICE enforcement on county property. He framed the call as part of a broader concern about detention practices and asserted that local officials could face personal civil liability if constitutional protections are not respected. "A county wide ban on ICE enforcement activities on county property is certainly legally available to you," he said.

Shannon McCuskey, of Emmett Township, spoke twice during the meeting. In an earlier comment she described ongoing problems with people riding four‑wheelers on the Ots Biological Preserve Trail that have damaged her driveway and property and said she has worked with a DNR officer, who she named, but wants cameras and better enforcement. Later she reiterated her opposition to any county funding or dealings with ICE. "I do oppose any funding going to ICE or any kind of dealings with ICE from my community," McCuskey said.

There was no recorded formal board action on immigration enforcement or immediate enforcement responses to the reported trail damage during the meeting. The comments were entered into the record during citizen's time; commissioners did not announce specific follow-up at the meeting.
