Board approves MDNR park grants, $737,000 taser funding and related contracts

The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 20 approved multiple grant agreements and a legislatively directed equipment award.
Community Development assistant director Lucy Huff described two Michigan Department of Natural Resources grants that the board approved by roll-call votes. The North Branch Boat Launch project (Bedford Township) is a roughly $400,000 renovation including grading, paving, parking, a concrete boat ramp and a sand kayak launch; the state grant is $222,000 with the remainder coming from local foundation funds. Historic Bridal Park improvements (Emmett Township) are projected at $575,000, with a $400,000 state grant and a $175,000 match from the county's parks millage; the project includes ADA-accessible paths and boardwalk replacement to restore access to the park's red bridge.
The board also voted to accept $737,000 in state-directed funding to replace tasers for the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office and partner agencies (Albion DPS and Marshall PD). Administrator/Controller Kelly Scott said the county will act as fiduciary for the funds, that no local match is required, and that the county is treating the purchase as a sole-source procurement through Axon "to ensure continuity with the equipment."
All three items passed unanimously, with members thanking staff and the state representative who sponsored the legislative direction for the taser funds.
