Council endorses stoplight/streetscape option, will send letter to state and governor

Charles Town City Council voted to submit a formal public comment on the Route 51 project and to send a parallel letter to the governor and the Secretary of Transportation urging either the stoplight/streetscape option (option five) or no-build if streetscaping cannot be achieved without property encroachment.
Council members discussed the draft letter at length, noting the public-comment deadline and differing views on which alternatives the state had presented. One councilor (speaker 14) said the draft “leans to either no build or heavily favoring the stoplight with the street improvements,” and the motion—moved and seconded—passed with members in agreement to both submit public comment and forward a copy to higher state officials.
Supporters framed the maneuver as the council’s strongest formal stance on the project to date and emphasized seeking streetscaping that preserves or enhances the downtown right-of-way. A dissenting councilor said other options not presented to the council may have been preferable, but the motion carried and staff were tasked with submitting the comment by the public-comment deadline.
