A Staff member from Parks and Recreation said the department is operating multiple youth programs out of the Carolinas Gym and the Calhoun Center, including toddler parent-and-child classes, story time, splash-pad play at the Calhoun Pool and a program called Crafty Tots.
"Auggie is a gopher tortoise that was, rescued, and is housed with the Parks and Recreation Outdoor Recreation staff over at the Waldron Family Park," the Staff member said, adding that staff bring the tortoise to special events to educate the public about gopher tortoises and best practices to keep them safe in nature.
The Staff member listed program offerings aimed at toddlers and families, saying staff run story time, playground sessions at the splash pad, and craft activities. The speaker described Auggie as a tool for outreach and wildlife education during those events.
A Parent asked whether they could bring a toddler to a story time that includes the tortoise, saying, "So I'm a parent. I've got a kid that that's that that is in the age group of the toddlers, and I can bring my kids and have a story time with a gopher tortoise." The Staff member confirmed that parents can bring their children to those story-time events.
Staff conveyed that Auggie is a rescued animal housed at Waldron Family Park and used at special events to teach visitors about gopher tortoises and how to protect them. No formal actions or votes were recorded during this exchange.
