The Village of South Range council voted July 9 to terminate the employment of Cooper Burkman after finding he had not obtained a required Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
The move followed a report from Assistant Street Commissioner D. Swetich that "C. Burkman had not yet obtained his Commercial Driver’s License," a point councilors said violated the agreed-upon deadline. Trustee Parolini moved to terminate Burkman’s employment; Trustee Marier seconded the motion, and the council carried it by roll call vote with all members voting in favor.
Immediately after the termination vote, Trustees voted to delay posting the open position until further notice. Trustee Marier made the motion to delay posting, seconded by Trustee Harkonen; the motion carried. Council did not set a timeline for reopening the vacancy during the meeting.
The agenda item stemmed from an earlier, meeting-approved addition to the agenda titled “Commercial Driver’s License,” which Trustees approved by motion at the start of the meeting after President Eakin requested the addition. The Street Commissioner’s report that same evening described multiple public-works activities tied to Fourth of July preparations, and specifically noted the employee’s noncompliance with the CDL requirement.
The council did not discuss severance, appeal rights, or details of the personnel file on the public record during the meeting. The council also did not announce a timetable for recruiting or clarify whether the position would be restructured.
The council adjourned the meeting at 8:45 p.m.
