Board approves $8.28 million NJDOT reimbursement and other public‑works purchases

Essex County commissioners approved several public‑works measures, including a federal‑aid agreement with the New Jersey Department of Transportation that will reimburse the county up to $8,283,420 for construction of signalized intersection improvements in Newark and Irvington.
David Antonio of the Department of Public Works told the board the improvements include upgrades at Springfield Avenue intersections in Irvington (Becker Terrace, Clinton Avenue, Grove Street) and four new traffic signals along Springfield Avenue, plus a signal at South 17th Street in Newark. Antonio said the work will be reimbursed under the federal‑aid agreement.
Separately, the board authorized the purchase of two 2024 Yamaha Wolverine ATVs for mosquito control, a contract award not to exceed $50,861 and funded by an NPD grant, to allow field crews to access remote or wooded sites. The board also agreed to consent to the Township of Montclair’s ordinance lowering the Valley Road speed limit to 25 mph; the county will replace speed‑limit signage but indicated no further financial impact.
All items in the public‑works block were approved by roll call.
